Gem’s love of jewellery and objects d’art overcame her world and the pursuit to master an-age old skill began..
Gem Freeman designs and makes silver, gold and leather jewellery from her workshop based in Dorset, England. She loves objects that are beautiful, stylish and out of the ordinary, and a passion for travel, the sea and fashion continue to inspire Gem’s handmade collections.
“I have designed very diverse pieces that have evolved into various collections to suit different passions and jewellery needs. I see jewellery as a fundamental way to express personality throughout time and position.”
Gem works mainly in silver and likes to go “straight into the metal” early on in the design process to get a feel of what the piece will finish as. “Sometimes I will use wax to create a design mould and it’s such an interesting medium to work with after sculpting metal. Other times I use nature to guide me, for example, the collection Barbados are shells found in the Caribbean, which I have had cast into solid silver.”
In 2013 Gem won Business Mother of the Year Dorset 2013 at the Venus Awards. This awards system recognises women in business. In 2014 Gem Returned to the Womens Awards as sponsor of the category Home Based Business and again in 2015 as sponsor of the Customer Service Award. “I am extremely inspired and grateful to be involved with inspirational women and men in the local community”
Gem’s latest range ‘Gem of England TM” is a collection of bright leather bracelets with charms that slide on in various designs including the whole alphabet. It is Gem’s mission to create a charity charm each year with proceeds going direct to the chosen charity to make a difference. 2016 will see the first charm launched – watch this space!
All pieces are hand made and hand crafted by Gem in her workshop in Dorset.
